Background:

Recombinant human TNF-alpha, expressed in engineered human cells, belongs to the Tumor Necrosis Factor protein family. TNF-alpha is a non-disulfide linked homotrimeric glycoprotein. TNF-alpha is a proinflammatory cytokine produced in response to infection, tissue damage and inflammation by many immune cells such as monocytes and macrophages. TNF-alpha is an acute phase protein that initates production of other cytokines; it recruits neutrophils and macrophages at the site of infection by increasing the vascular permeability. TNF-alpha synergizes with other cytokines including IL-1 beta, IFN-gamma and TGF-beta. Genetic variations in TNF-alpha are correlated with autoimmune diseases.
